When Tiago came into the world in 2010, doctors told his parents he would never emerge from the vegetative state into which he was born. They went on to say his cerebral palsy would mean that Tiago would never recognise his parents, never stand on his own, never speak—he would not even smile.
Tiago’s parents refused to accept this fate for their son, and dedicated their lives, together with their son and a team of therapists, to ensure their son’s life would be as full as possible.
Most people will never know the kinds of challenges Tiago is faced with every day, but we can all learn from the example Tiago and his parents set, viewing each day as an opportunity to reach higher. The doctors were wrong. Tiago often smiles in response to those around him. He shows love and affection, and he actively participates in his own treatment.
Among the many challenges Tiago’s family has faced, the financial burden has been great and they have had to move mountains to raise the funds necessary to facilitate Tiago’s extensive treatment program. This series of images documents how love, persistence, and hope can overcome even a severe sentence like the one handed down to Tiago at birth.
